ViraPhyte™
is a Chinese herb formula that is specifically designed to address HIV infection.
ViraPhyte™ combines a Chinese medical model of HIV infection and treatment
with Western research into anti-HIV and immune-regulating potential of specific
herbs. We are currently conducting a study of ViraPhyte™, and are
looking to enroll more participants. The investigators are seeking volunteers
who are HIV positive, not taking antiretroviral drugs, and who want to try
a non-pharmaceutical way to live with HIV disease. This study is being sponsored
by FIAR (Foundation for Integrative AIDS Research) and 1 Tribe Herbs, both
based in New York City. There is no requirement to participate in the study
to purchase or use ViraPhyte™. The investigators are Mark Kuebel,
L.Ac. and Fred Blair, L.Ac., two long-time health and AIDS activists who
are licensed acupuncturists and Chinese herbalists.
ViraPhyte™, or Ti Liang Zhu San (“Cool, Lift, Expel Powder”)
is designed for individuals who have not yet begun antiretroviral therapy
(ARV) or have decided to take a break (a treatment interruption) from ARV.
ViraPhyte™ is designed with the goal of lowering HIV viral load, and
stabilizing or increasing T-cell (CD4) counts using the gentle properties
of common Chinese herbs. This study will provide data on whether ViraPhyte™
is able to achieve these goals. The investigators are currently collecting
CD4, viral load, CBC (complete blood count) and quality of life data from
persons taking the formula. Participants are volunteers, and fully understand
that ViraPhyte™ is not a guaranteed substitute for antiretroviral
drugs.
The study is collecting data to enable further testing of ViraPhyte™
in a clinical trial. Participant data will enable the investigators to apply
for a clinical trial grant that would be a rigorous, controlled study to
evaluate the ability of ViraPhyte™ to manage HIV. Data from this study
will allow the sponsors to seek further research funding from the National
Institutes of Health and other organizations that grant research funds for
herbal medicines.
